Live in Turbulent Times
If you
work in the exposed, competitive, commercial sector you
do not need to be reminded that the impact of globalisation
means that change is the only constant.
The
rate of change in Ireland over the past 15 years has intensified
– we have become the most open global economy in the
world - and in this turbulent context organisations that
want to thrive here must constantly adapt and innovate or
else… fade away!
All
sectors have to change radically. Organisations, previously
considered bastions of stability and impervious to the forces
of global competition are having to face up to the challenges
of deregulation, intense external scrutiny, talent shortage,
people’s search for a decent, balanced life, an increasingly
educated consumer who is demanding quality and value-for-money. This holds true for all organisations from the private sector to universities, semi-state bodies, the vast health sector, the wider public service and NGO’s.
In this
cauldron managers are stretched both to run the current
business and to manage major change. The capacity of the
organisation to absorb change is often overwhelming, change
fatigue sets in and initiatives fail to achieve their goals.
The critical need to innovate and build long-term customer
relations are sacrificed for ever-more pressing short term
results.
The
other side of the coin is that change provides immense opportunity.
In the global market place the continuous cycle of learning,
developing insights, selecting ideas and developing concepts
happens fast. Innovative organisations spot ideas and make
them work commercially.
